6 (weird) Fashion Tricks That Will Fit in Your Bag

After years of styling photo shoots and special events, I’ve banked a ton of tricks to fix just about any malfunction…and quickly learned that a small batch of items will fix the most commons wardrobe fails. And you can fit them all in your average handbag ; )

When you’re the stylist on set, you only have about 2mins to fix any problem.

And if these items can perform under that kind of pressure, I know they’ll work for you too. That’s why I’ve developed an arsenal of special tricks to fixing most wardrobe malfunctions in a snap. I keep my set bag fully stocked with these items and are always recommending them to my clients. While every day isn’t a photo shoot (thank god), that doesn’t mean wardrobe malfunctions won’t occur. Luckily for you, my list of pro tricks can go right from my set bag into your handbag (with the help of Amazon, of course).

01. Foot Balm

Nothing can take down your day quite like a blister. Whether you’re on your feet all day or just commuting to and from work, certain shoes will just rub your feet the wrong way…especially if they’re new. Just like marathon runners who need to put some kind of gel/balm on their legs to prevent rubbing, your feet are no different. Rub Foot Glide on areas of your feet that are particularly blister-prone, and viola--no more blisters! A modern miracle.

02. Moleskin

Another amazing solve for shoe discomfort is adhering a piece of moleskin to the inside of your shoe. Place it in areas where your shoe tends to rub (sticker side against the shoe interior), and instead of that harsh pull from the leather you’ll feel a cozy cushion for your feet.

03. Top Stick

Does your favorite dress or top put you at constant risk of an accidental public reveal?  Does your hem sometimes drop without warning? The fastest way to hold your clothes in place is with fashion tape--but not just any kind of double stick tape will do. If you want your tape to really hold you in place for the day, the hands down choice is Top Stick. It’s originally intended to hold on men’s toupees--yes, toupees--so you know it works.

04. Makeup Hood

Anyone who wears makeup is familiar with those stubborn orange smears that appear around the neckline of a shirt you just tried on--and now your full face is wiped onto the inside of a sweater. One hack that we’ve picked up is using a makeup hood or quick changes, trying on clothes in a fitting room, or any other situation when you can’t start over with your makeup. This mesh hood covers your hair and face to protect both your makeup and your garments during over-the-head changes.

05. Deodorant Sponge

Wondering how to get rid of those annoying white streaks that seem to sneak their way onto every garment? A little foam sponge is all you need to wipe away these smudges. A deodorant sponge removes deodorant marks and other product streaks (think makeup) from clothing in seconds, so you can quit trying (and failing) to scrub them off with a damp paper towel. It won’t work. Pro tip: if you’re stuck in a pinch without a proper sponge, the foam casing on a dry cleaner hanger will get the job done.

06. Mini Scissors

How many times have you been out and needed to cut an itchy tag or loose thread? The solution should never be ripping it off--don’t risk tearing a hole in whatever you’re wearing. For emergencies like these, all you need is a pair of mini scissors. You’ll be surprised by how many times these will save you in a wardrobe malfunction.

07. Shout Wipes

In a sea of a million stain removers, Shout wipes are my go to. As opposed to a stain pen, the wipe allows you to have more control over what you’re doing--which is critical when it comes to delicate fabrics and materials. My pro tip? Dab the wipe on the back of your hand before applying to the fabric--even too much of this solution can leave a ring on your more delicate items.
