Have You Ever Shown Up Wearing the Wrong Thing?

You’ve been planning your outfit for weeks. Finally the day is here, and you walk into the event filled with confidence--until you look around. Everyone else has outdressed you, and it turns out you’re completely underdressed for the occasion you thought was supposed to be “super casual.” Mortified, you hide in the corner nibbling on passed hors d’oeuvres until you can slip out sight unseen.

Or maybe it’s happened to you on the first day of a new job. You spend hours picking out the perfect pant suit, pairing it with a business professional button down and a practical heel. You strut into the office, only to find a sea of business casual from jeans to sweaters. You clearly misread the office environment, and quickly slip off your blazer and untuck your shirt in an effort to at least blend in until 5pm.

Even worse, you may have had a wardrobe disaster on an already nerve-wracking first date. Wanting to impress, you think a trendy outfit and sky high heels, imagining pulling up to a chic restaurant filled with sexy velvet banquets and dimly lit chandeliers.  Instead, you end up meeting at the dive bar next to the trendy restaurant, and not exactly dressed for a few rounds of beer.  Suddenly your low-cut jumpsuit reads ‘trying too hard’ and your platforms come off as ‘where does she think she’s going?!’

It’s happened to the best of us. Sometimes we misinterpret the dress code, and sometimes everyone else simply ignores it. Either way, feeling foolish and out of place because of what you’re wearing is a big confidence blow, and let’s be honest, can be scarring enough for you to remember years later.

When this happens, people tend to resort to extremes so it doesn’t happen again. For some people this may mean sticking to basic black, neutral shapes, and avoiding interesting accessories all together. This outfit screams “don’t look at me” and will likely hold you back from being your most vivacious self. Don’t let one mistake turn you into a wallflower!

One way to take back your confidence is to get a second opinion. As a professional stylist, I’ve seen it all. I’ve put together looks for clients for an entire spectrum of events--from themed Halloween bashes to black tie galas, finding the perfect outfit for an event that (most importantly) makes my client feel amazing has now become second nature. I want my clients to feel like they own the room, not like they need to hide in it.

If you’re one of those people who gets a feeling of dread anytime someone mentions a dress code like ‘creative black tie’ or ‘smart casual’ or ‘office chic’, you would benefit from working with a stylist to translate those concepts into your personal style so you can own any room you’re in. Schedule a free discovery call, and find out how you can go from wallflower to show stopper.
